Novelty of Rural Land

You may hear “rural vacationing” and think, “Really? Why would I buy rural land to vacation on?”

Yet, more people are purchasing land in the country every single day as a way to decompress and relax. It’s a new idea that’s gripping people who need a place to retreat to. If you’re intrigued, keep reading. We have everything you need to know about what rural land is, why it’s a good investment, and what living on this property looks like.

What is rural land?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, rural land is defined as land in an unincorporated area with a population density of fewer than a thousand inhabitants per square mile. Often, rural properties are unrelated to larger urban areas and do not have a central city. This is often appealing to the landowner who wants to use them as an escape and may use them as an opportunity to recreate in various ways (hiking, camping, kayaking, hunting, fishing, farming, horseback riding, ATVing, etc.).

Why invest in rural land?

1. It’s less stressful. You may not realize how stressful your daily life is in the city (or suburbs) until you get some fresh air out in the country. Once you spend a few days on rural land, you won’t be able to leave. It’s just that relaxing!

2. It allows you to connect with your community. By definition, the rural community you live in will be small. This means you’ll actually have the opportunity to get to know the people around you. Instead of having 50 neighbors, you may have two or three. When you go into town, you’ll shop local instead of a larger retailer. Although this will be an adjustment initially, it’ll ultimately bring you closer and allow you to network and connect much faster.

3. It gives you a spot to host friends and family. If you’re family-oriented, can you think of anything better than having land to host a gathering on every single year? For families who have annual reunions or love to recreate together, there’s nothing better than having a big property to gather. Invest now for countless memories to come.

What does rural living look like?

Not everyone is ready to commit to living on rural land 100 percent of the time. And there’s no shame in that! Fortunately, you can buy, build, live, or vacation on your rural land. There are a lot of options, and you don’t have to commit to anything all at once. It’s whatever you’re comfortable with! Each option looks different.

  • Buying: Buying land is where it all starts. Once you buy, you can decide which direction you want to go. Do you want to build on your land or keep it open for an activity like hunting? Do you want to make it your primary residence or only visit a couple of times a year? There are no wrong answers, but your answers can help direct your steps to the right property.

  • Building: Once you own rural land, you can do what you want with it. Rural landowners may build a large house for their own family and friends to come to visit, smaller tiny houses to rent out, or storage facilities to make money. It’s all up to you!

  • Living: If you’re ready to really commit to the rural life, go ahead and buy your land to live on it full-time. Some landowners will start with rural vacationing and decide that their short time there just isn’t enough. What starts as a vacation soon becomes full-time living!

  • Vacationing: Many rural landowners use their recreational land as an escape. Rural vacationing is popular. You can head up to your little retreat with friends and family on the weekend or during extend breaks to camp, hike, hunt, or recreate in whatever way suits you best. A little time in nature never hurt anyone!
