The divine beauty of the countryside and an active lifestyle
Pittsburg County is generally hilly and, in places, mountainous. The Ouachita Mountains extend into the southeastern portion, with sandstone hills contributing to most of the landscape in the northern and western sections. The Canadian River and Lake Eufaula form the northern boundary and drain most of Pittsburg County. A few creeks and streams, including Jack Fork Creek, drain into Boggy Creek and the Kiamichi River and eventually into the Red River.
Your safety is the first priority; however, four-wheel drive to see the rough nature is recommended. Go for ATV/motorcycle area and hiking. Visit the Tucker Tower or go for the historic tower that rises up 60-feet above Lake Murray and acts as a beacon on the lake. With interactive displays, kids learn about the animals in the area. You can grab a treat with the kids and watch chocolates roll off the production line from the floor-to-ceiling windows at the chocolate factory. See the traditional Village, which hosts reenactments and living history demonstrations. You have swimming areas, and kids love animals, so stop at the Bison Viewing Area located off U.S. Route 177, just south of Sulphur. See the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum for history on the fort. As a top Oklahoma park area, Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge provides a refuge for free-range buffalo, Texas Longhorn cattle, prairie dogs, deer, and elk as well.
