Tennessee is almost 500 miles long, and in that great span the terrain shifts from rugged mountains on the eastern side of the state to mellow flatland in the west. In the middle, the valley is interrupted by the Cumberland Plateau, a long flat mountain that’s home to some of the state’s most dramatic terrain. Put it all together and you have variety: steep whitewater and views in the mountains, waterfalls and rock climbing along the Cumberland Plateau, and the great Mississippi snaking through the west. And that’s not even counting the barbecue and hot fried chicken.
