The state’s unofficial nickname—the Show Me State—might be political in origin, but it could just as easily apply to its outdoor character. Show me a state with 6,000 caves, crystal-clear spring-fed rivers (one in the Wild and Scenic system), great plains in the north, Ozark Mountains in the south, and more than three million acres of public land, and we’ll show you Missouri. It’s a state where canoeing is a religion, and there’s no shortage of places to worship. You’ll also find big deciduous forests to hike and bike in and, thanks to a dominant karst landscape, an entire underground world to explore.
