Today, I’m going to
talk about the term ‘Off The Grid’.

According to the
Webster’s dictionary, ‘Off The Grid’ means ‘a dwelling not
connected to public utilities.

It can also, the term can
also be more broadly used as a system or lifestyle designed to help
people function without the support of remote infrastructure. So, if
your small community has its own solar panels, and you guys share
them, you guys are technically off the grid even though you have a
mini grid, right? Many of you wouldn’t consider your home off the
grid because it’s connected to your little mini solar power
network, it’s off the grid because it’s not connected to the
major power network in the United States, right.

So, there are many
different ways to define off the grid, right. Even my house here in
the sierra is slightly off the grid, it was built with two sources of
gas; we have natural gas running to the property from the county, but
it wasn’t used, instead an oil tank was installed on this property,
a huge little tank; five hundred gallons double walled. If the whole
place burns down, the little tank would still be here to supply fuel
for the winter. So, my primary residence this year is actually
slightly off the grid. We have the fuel delivered a couple of times a
year to last us through the winter.

Now we have lots of
redundancy, we have fireplaces, we have electrical backup, we are off
the grid as far as our primary heat source to tell you the truth and
we are very much connected typically as far as our lot. Some people
like the builders of the home we ended up buying chose not to connect
to all the utilities that are available and that’s what happened in
my personal case.

The idea of living off
the grid has been recently popularized in Television shows. The term
has been used since 1978 to describe the lifestyle and the type of
dwelling that I described that the Webster is trying to describe as
not being connected to public utilities.

Today, the term is
extremely popular though probably and the lifestyle is extremely
popular. There are probably 250,000 off the grid-ers today at least
maybe 300,000 and that figure is climbing rapidly.

The concept of
sustainable off the grid communities is taking off self-sufficiency.
This is all a movement, it’s the time that we’re living in and
people want to leave the cities, right?

We’ve done some
research here at Online Land Sales recently that shows us that 50% of
the people living in the cities don’t want to live there. We also
did some research recently that has shown that 37% of Americans want
a rural lifestyle but only half of Americans actually have that rural
lifestyle.

At Online Land Sales, we
find this to be a pressure gradient that needs relief. That’s one
of the reasons why we are in this business, we are hoping to help you
