Making Dough Part 5: Pick Your Own

Ok, so we have made it to part 5, the last article in this series about how to make money from your homestead. So I thought I would finish with a big one. Now I will say that this one may not work for everyone. You have to have plenty of space for this and time to take care of your crops so that you are producing quality products. When I was a kid we went to a few different farms to pick our own strawberries, apples, corn, and more. It was a fun family experience and we got some great food out of it too!

What It Is

Pick Your Own is pretty much what it sounds like. You grow more crops than what you yourself will need and then you allow folks to come to your property and pick their own. This works with a variety of crops from fruits and vegetables to Halloween pumpkins and even Christmas trees. Choose crops that fit in where you live and something you are growing for yourself as well. This way you can use the excess that you do not sell by end of the season.

This idea works best if you grow organically, but that is not a must. It will just yield you a higher price.

What You Need To Know

First, make sure you know the laws in your area. This kind of operation is not legal everywhere, unfortunately. Also, check your covenants as having lots of folks coming and going may be a violation of them.

You will need to have plenty of lands and the time and equipment to grow abundant and quality crops. I would recommend have at least 5 acres of land dedicated to this operation.

Cost

This is not a cheap one to start. You will need to invest plenty of money into seeds, equipment, and maybe even marketing. You can easily spend thousands of dollars getting this one off the ground. On the other hand, if you are already growing such large crops, your startup will be very low.

Conclusion:

This article was a bit shorter than the previous ones and for that, I apologize. I actually on a train as I write this. But this money-making idea is one that I did not want to leave off. Of the 5 ideas I gave in this series, I believe that it also has one of the highest profit potentials out of the 5 ideas. This is one that can certainly become a full-time gig and totally replace your job income.

As we wrap up this series, I hope you found something that will allow you to begin making an income from your off-grid lifestyle. It is so rewarding to know that your land can sustain you and truly contribute to your financial success. Good luck with whatever venture you go for!

Oh, and if you have any money-making ideas of your own, please do share them in the comments!
