{"title":"Off the Grid Defined","description":"\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eToday, I’m going to\ntalk about the term ‘Off The Grid’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eAccording to the\nWebster’s dictionary, ‘Off The Grid’ means ‘a dwelling not\nconnected to public utilities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eIt can also, the term can\nalso be more broadly used as a system or lifestyle designed to help\npeople function without the support of remote infrastructure. So, if\nyour small community has its own solar panels, and you guys share\nthem, you guys are technically off the grid even though you have a\nmini grid, right? Many of you wouldn’t consider your home off the\ngrid because it’s connected to your little mini solar power\nnetwork, it’s off the grid because it’s not connected to the\nmajor power network in the United States, right.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eSo, there are many\ndifferent ways to define off the grid, right. Even my house here in\nthe sierra is slightly off the grid, it was built with two sources of\ngas; we have natural gas running to the property from the county, but\nit wasn’t used, instead an oil tank was installed on this property,\na huge little tank; five hundred gallons double walled. If the whole\nplace burns down, the little tank would still be here to supply fuel\nfor the winter. So, my primary residence this year is actually\nslightly off the grid. We have the fuel delivered a couple of times a\nyear to last us through the winter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eNow we have lots of\nredundancy, we have fireplaces, we have electrical backup, we are off\nthe grid as far as our primary heat source to tell you the truth and\nwe are very much connected typically as far as our lot. Some people\nlike the builders of the home we ended up buying chose not to connect\nto all the utilities that are available and that’s what happened in\nmy personal case.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eThe idea of living off\nthe grid has been recently popularized in Television shows. The term\nhas been used since 1978 to describe the lifestyle and the type of\ndwelling that I described that the Webster is trying to describe as\nnot being connected to public utilities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eToday, the term is\nextremely popular though probably and the lifestyle is extremely\npopular. There are probably 250,000 off the grid-ers today at least\nmaybe 300,000 and that figure is climbing rapidly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eThe concept of\nsustainable off the grid communities is taking off self-sufficiency.\nThis is all a movement, it’s the time that we’re living in and\npeople want to leave the cities, right? \n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"\u003eWe’ve done some\nresearch here at Online Land Sales recently that shows us that 50% of\nthe people living in the cities don’t want to live there.
